About
For most of us, these are the last weeks of our stay here at Cal. As we finish off one of the last semesters we will ever take as an undergraduate, we are required to take a much heralded course entitled “Mechatronics.” Aside from learning many of the details associated with this subject, the principle purpose of this course is the famed senior design project. Most of our course grade is based upon this very one assignment. It takes all semester to plan, to build, and to perfect.
For our project, we have collectively decided to construct a device with applicable utility. Rather than spend our efforts and skills on something that merely illustrates the concepts behind electronically controlled mechanical devices, we wanted our project to function with potential of implementation. And so we chose the velocity variable headlights (VVH), much akin to the BMW adaptive headlights currently in production on many of their models. It was difficult to ultimately decide on a project idea because so many we came up with seemed simple, lacking utility, or couldn’t satisfy the requirements of the course. The VVH were ultimately decided upon for their reliability and accessibility by all members of the group.
We all may have our different skill sets and areas of expertise, but through the course of this project we will develop a collective identity and purpose that will manifest itself into a finished project worthy of presentation at the end of the semester. We can only hope that our project will do best in the competition at the trade show…
